Key Places of Lake Kingdom
1. MIDDLE LAKE CITY (MLC)
Middle Lake is the capital of Lake Kingdom.
Located on the piece of land between three Great Lakes, the city is famous for its winds. Thanks to the convenient location, the city and suburbs have become a perfect place to build ports for trading with the rest of the continent. As the city and its suburbs continue to develop, it attracts tourists from all over the world. Also, various universities provide affordable programs for young talents who help transform the civilization.
This old city has multiple stunning landmarks, such as the Golden Palace and the Academy for future guardians.

Life in the capital is controversial. It’s famous for its cultural diversity, as mages from all over the World come here in search of big opportunities. Many actors, musicians, and artists started their careers in this wonderful city. On the other hand, Middle Lake city has become a popular place among criminal gangs who create trouble for local guardians. That’s why many interesting stories take place here.

2. SANTOS
Santos is the second major city located on the shore at North-East. It’s famous for its harsh climate and the abundance of criminals who don’t make residents’ lives easy.
But despite its stark reputation, Santos is a gorgeous old city surrounded by the mountains, offering breathtaking views.
Also, Santos is a key port in transcontinental trades. It has a fleet and multiple excellent training programs for the guardians, especially those who serve in the navy. The city has famous schools for doctors and teachers. Many mages who wish to succeed in one of those careers dream of relocating to Santos.

3. DRAGONVILLE (FORMERLY TRIVILLE)
Dragonville used to be a small town with only one famous landmark: The Bridge of Wishes. People here believe that every amazing journey starts with a sincere wish, and they encourage tourists to seize this opportunity to bring about positive change in their lives. No wonder this mysterious place became the setting for the very first story in the series.

Long story short, one young man wished to protect his beloved woman, so he used his wish to bring about change in their society. Later, thanks to his good friend, the young man could bring his own dream into life - he built a dragon farm and tamed the first two dragons. Later, he started training dragon riders and even published a book about these amazing creatures.
Thanks to the farm, Dragonville has become a crowded city with a busy rhythm of life. Multiple tourists arrive here every year to watch the flight competitions and even take a couple of lessons from the famous farm owner. You can read more about the dragons in the Fauna and Dragons section of the encyclopedia.

4. DEATH ISLAND
Death Island was discovered by a mage who went to the north of Lake Kingdom to study polar dragons. He was aware that because of the magnetic anomaly, his magic wouldn’t work there, so he did his best to be ready for such a trip – he took all the essential equipment, food, and a strong horse.
In the middle of his way, the mage got caught in a blizzard and had to seek shelter in one of the caves. Inside, he was amazed by an unusual, glowing light coming from the crystals growing in the rocks – they shone a dull purple. Exhausted by his trip, he decided to inspect them in the morning and fell asleep. When he woke up, the sun outside shone brightly, and all the crystals had turned red.
The mage took several samples of these amazing crystals and got back to the continent. In the laboratory, the mage figured out that a strong magnetic anomaly on the island charged the crystals, making them change their color in a particular order, going through the whole spectrum within 12 hours. Thus, he showed the samples to the King, and Time Crystals quickly became popular among the mages as a convenient tool for time measuring.
However, there was one complication – crystal extraction. The same anomaly that charged the crystals of time blocked magic channels. Everyone who stepped on this land temporarily lost their powers, but this effect could become irreversible if the person spent at least a year on Death Island.
The mages came up with a solution – it was decided to send the prisoners to Death Island and assign them to extract labor. The government built special prisons and mines and hired wardens to watch the prisoners (usually on a 6–8-month contract to ensure the wardens can fully recover after their duty).
This solution had a positive impact on the society of the Lake Kingdoms – at first, criminals who committed serious crimes and were supposed to be sentenced to death were isolated, and their powers were suppressed. Secondly, their labor made the crystal extraction process extremely cheap, which made it affordable.

5. MERCY HOUSES

Mercy Houses are special government facilities designed to reduce the number of destructive Gifts in women. Since the beginning of the Order, women in Crystal World were considered solely as prospective wives and mothers who were meant to nurture the future generations. They weren’t allowed to have strong magic that could hurt any human being.
In adolescence, when the Gift manifested and was considered ‘potentially dangerous’, a special Gift Hunter was responsible for apprehending such a teenage girl and bringing her to Mercy House for further investigation. There, a specially trained mercy sister usually explored the power and decided whether it could be tamed or if the girl needed to rid herself of her destructive power.
As no one could take the magic away against human will, the idea of having a ‘wrong Gift’ was widely propagated in communities, especially in schools. Even though destructive Gifts were rare among women, a fear of having such Gift was a subject for serious concern for many teenagers.
In Mercy House, the procedure of removing the Gift included three stages:
1. Investigation
When the girl had just been admitted to the facility, the assigned Mercy sister spoke with her and assessed the potential danger posed by her Gift. In many cases, the girls were trained to tame non-fatal powers such as Hypnosis or Paralyzing, and then sent back home. However, the Gifts of Flame, Poisoning, or Lightning were red-flagged, so the Girls were sent to the next stage of Gift removal procedure.

2. Negotiation
The job of Mercy sister was to persuade the teenage girl to let them take her Gift voluntarily. The sisters usually answered all the questions and soothed worries. In fact, they tried to enliven a hope that this risky procedure might end up successfully, without a full loss of magic. In fact, this chance for recovery was just a lie.
3. Loss of magic
During the procedure, an assigned mage burned magic channels completely. Later, the girls were sent away to the closed reservations for Incapables, where they couldn’t even contact their families. Information about the last stage was kept secret from society, and only a few members of the Mercy sorority knew the full truth. Of course, until Lana figured everything out and began working to end the oppression against women.

6. HIGH CANYONS
High Canyons is near the capital. It remains isolated due to the tricky terrain. The dragons that tend to migrate often choose this place for their habitats. Not surprisingly, the high canyons area is very popular among scientists and adventurers who love studying the dragons in their natural habitats.
The place is often mentioned in the stories, in the scenes when mages travel around the Kingdom. For the first time, High Canyons are mentioned in The Academy (Magic Squad series, book 1). It is the story of four friends travelling to the dragon’s caves to steal a few eggs.
Later, in Forbidden Manuscript (Magic Squad series, book 2), Elisa and Jackie travel to the area to stop a cult leader who sacrifices the lives of young women at the full moon.
One of the most epic episodes to take place in this area was the final battle between mages and Incapables in the final story, Colliding Hearts (Rebellion series, book 3).

7. ARCTIC FOREST
Arctic Forest is an area of permafrost, so mages don’t live there. However, the area isn’t deserted - it’s home for thousands of polar species, including the famous white deer with golden hoofs and polar fox with shining red eyes. The Arctic forest is one of the few places in Crystal World where Snows, a rare dragon with snowy-white scales, prefers to live.
What else makes this area so cool? Besides being cold, Arctic Forest is where magnetic anomalies can be visible in the skies. This place inspired many legends and tales. One of them, the most popular among historians, is that the spirits of everyone who ever lived in Crystal World come to live in Arctic Forest in the afterlife. That’s why the sky is shining there - it is believed that the shining is the Light of their souls.
