History
Crystal World is a magical place, and it’s constantly developing. During its lifespan, it has passed through important milestones that have shaped its societies and cultures. As you read the story’s cycles, you might notice that some of the time periods are reflected in the plot. It isn’t accidental. Every book series focuses on the characters who brought about a change that affected their world.
Here are the key milestones that happened in Lake Kingdom and affected Crystal World:
1. Discovery of the Crystal World
According to legend, mages originally lived in a hostile world ruled by Incapables, people without magic. As a minority, they were hunted and eliminated for their powers. The truth was that Incapable rulers were afraid. After all, if the mages united and used their magic to fight back, they could dominate the realm!
To prevent that, Incapable rulers spread lies portraying mages as monsters who possessed ‘evil powers’ and showed no mercy when committing crimes or hurting others. Though it wasn’t true, the propaganda was effective: mages who dared to use their powers were reported and brought to ‘witch trials,’ where they were publicly executed. The authorities quickly silenced anyone who spoke out against them, including regular Incapables who only wanted to help.
When magic was nearly destroyed, a few survivors did their best to conceal their powers. Many chose to live in isolated communities, pretending to be Incapables to stay safe. This gave them a brief respite and time to heal, and they began to consider restoring their population. One day, when the Incapables announced a great war, the community leaders faced a choice: use their last resources in a reckless attempt to seize power and risk the end of their race or unite and use all their magic to create a portal to a different, more hospitable world, where they could finally be free from oppression.
At that moment, six of the strongest mages gathered to perform a sacred ritual. Each possessed a unique power: four mages had elemental Gifts (Fire, Earth, Water, and Air); one wielded an external power enabling dream-travel between realms; and one, a mind-reading Gift (mental power), could unite all the mages’ consciousnesses during the ritual.
Together, they discovered a world perfectly suited for them – one where nature was whimsical, and the inhabitants, such as dragons and whales, were intelligent and powerful. Drawing on every ounce of magic from the mages present, they created a portal.
All the mages agreed to seal the portal forever and never look back. However, one of the powerful six left a small gap – the grave of his deceased wife remained in the old world, and he hoped to visit it one day when the dust had settled. He kept this secret, carrying a short spell in his pocket until the day he died. This spell would intrigue his descendants, and one day, a distant offspring, a talented inventor, would decide to unravel its mystery…

2. First Rulers
The six mages who led the ritual and discovered the Crystal World now had an entire realm to explore. Eager to begin, they held their first conference. After some brainstorming, they decided to divide the land, each taking responsibility for a region and the people who followed them.
Thus, the six Kingdoms were formed. A hundred years later, one Kingdom split in two, as its twin rulers couldn’t agree on who should lead. Officially, now there are the union of seven Kingdoms.
Officially, there was no doubt that it was a spanningising journey, but the leaders soon faced a problem they never expected to have – they began to lose control and authority. The truth was that they were no longer in charge of their small village. They had to lead the whole nation, which rapidly repopulated and faced new challenges, including growing societal conflicts that often spiraled out of control and led to chaos.
After confronting multiple societal issues, the leaders and their descendants realized they needed to instill discipline and protect people from themselves. The Kings met again and decided on a drastic measure to restore order: they implemented a set of tactics learned from the rulers of their former world. Though not all leaders supported oppressive methods, they saw it as the only alternative to endless wars and domestic strife. They strengthened the laws and established a new order.
To maintain order, the nations compiled all their control tactics into a special manuscript: The Book of Life. Its location was kept secret, known only to a select few – it was stored near the site where the mages first opened the portal, in a dark castle north of Middle Lake, the capital of Lake Kingdom.

3. THE ORDER AND GUARDIAN CODE
The Order established by the mages was strict – mages who broke the law were no longer simply punished or imprisoned for severe crimes. Instead, the most ‘hopeless’ lawbreakers faced a horrifying fate: they were stripped of their powers and turned into Incapables.
To support the Order, the leaders established a legal system intended to bring safety and peace to every household. To ensure fairness, they created the Guardian Code – a set of principles allowing law enforcers (Guardians) to use their judgment, ensuring the law served the people rather than oppressing them.
To embrace their power, all Guardians recite the Guardian Oath – a verse they learn for a ritual held the day after completing their first year at the Academy.

4. FORMATION OF PATRIARCHY
This measure, along with the implementation of Guardians, allowed the rulers to significantly reduce crime within a year. Impressed by the system’s effectiveness, some rulers took it even further – tightening restrictions to secure their thrones. This led to the rise of dictatorships in which mages lived in fear, worried that their powers would be stripped if they disobeyed the law.
One of the darkest chapters in history was erased from official records (but preserved in the Two Worlds series). It occurred when a dictator, obsessed with greed and control, gathered four Oracles for a ritual to foresee his dynasty’s fate. Gathering four Oracles was no small feat: those with the Gift of prophecy are born only once every 25 years, and to participate in such a ritual, each Oracle must have manifested their Gift (typically in adolescence) and still be alive. The Oracles involved were aged 16, 41, 66, and 91.
When the four Oracles combined their powers, they could see far further into the future than any could alone – witnessing events centuries beyond their own lifespans. Together, they saw a Divine Prophecy: the appearance of the “Queen of Ashes,” a young woman with the Gift of Fire, destined to rise to power and end the dictatorship in the Lake Kingdom, thereby bringing the royal dynasty to a close.
Terrified, the King called an emergency summit and shared the prophecy with all the rulers of the Seven Kingdoms. There, the mages agreed to do everything possible to prevent this threat to their rule. They used tactics from The Book of Life to bar women from politics, law, justice, and other key positions that upheld the existing order. Any woman who might pose a threat was to be stripped of her magic. This policy targeted not just those with the Gift of Fire, but all women with destructive powers who might one day fight back.
The leaders began spreading lies, claiming that women with destructive powers were potential lawbreakers. They started arresting such women under the pretense of ‘examination.’ When questions arose, they responded with force, detaining anyone who dared challenge the new order. The arrested women were placed in special facilities called Mercy Houses. Those whose powers were deemed most dangerous (including the Gift of Fire) were turned into Incapables.
Authorities acted shrewdly – knowing that about half of all mages possessed the Telekinesis Gift, they also sent such women to Mercy Houses. After a few weeks of training the teenage girls with Telekinesis, they released them, which brought great relief to their families. This strategy helped the Order maintain its reputation as ‘peacemakers.’
Year after year, the system was becoming more efficient. School teachers were tasked with observing teenage girls whose Gifts were about to manifest, feeding them propaganda about obedience to the law and cooperation with authorities if they witnessed forbidden magic. School doctors conducted annual exams and provided lists of students with newly manifested Gifts. Meanwhile, local churches set out to ‘convince’ young mothers and girls that following the Order was a sacred duty and questioning it meant burning in hell. The church even created a special set of rules for priests, recorded in the Forbidden Manuscript, which was kept locked in a secure church room.
Each Guardian House also had a special Gift Hunter whose true identity was kept secret – he appeared to others as just another guardian. His job was to monitor local schools, spy on teenage girls in the ‘risky category,’ and capture those who manifested destructive Gifts, delivering them to the nearest Mercy House.

5. THE ERA OF WITCHES
Witnessing so much pressure and injustice against teenage girls, a small group of women began working to help them. To reduce the risk of discovery by authorities, the witches usually settled deep in the forests and lived in isolation. Their mission was to shelter girls from nearby cities and villages – those who had managed to escape arrest after their destructive Gift manifested.
The witches hid the girls under protective spells, then helped them relocate to distant communities, where other witches trained them to master their powers. Many of these women continued the mission, becoming witches themselves and aiding the next generation.
Witches often worked with trusted agents – ordinary women in nearby cities or villages with access to schools. The agents’ mission was to help girls escape the Gift Hunter and deliver them safely to a witch’s house.
Unsurprisingly, witches were hunted by the authorities. Choosing this path meant living in constant danger – risking capture and execution for ‘breaking the law.’ Yet, despite the risks, many witches remained committed to their mission. They believed that one day they would save the prophesied “Queen of Ashes,” ushering in the fall of the Order and a new era of prosperity.

6. BIRTH OF FEMINISM
After the Order was established, it took centuries for society to forget that the world had ever been different. With all records of past freedom destroyed, mages came to believe the Order followed Divine law, and compliance became second nature. Young women typically chose obedience over resistance. Many believed that possessing a destructive Gift made them a danger to society, so they voluntarily submitted to authorities at Mercy Houses, where the magic channels on their fingertips were burned and their powers taken away.
But nothing lasts forever. Even the darkest times end, and that day arrived when more women began questioning the system. One of them, Lana Morris, was raised by a feminist mother. Though her mother wasn’t around long, Lana always believed things could be different for women. A mind reader, Lana had an unusual dream for a young woman: she wanted to follow in her father’s footsteps and become a detective. Though this path was closed to her, she refused to give up and started investigating local crime, which became her way of seeing the bigger picture.
After Lana left her hometown, she soon found herself involved in another investigation—this time landing in the witness protection program at one of the most secluded places in the Lake Kingdom: Mercy House. There, with help from her new ally Irida, Lana found and read The Book of Life. Once the two women uncovered the deception, Lana knew she had to keep fighting for a better tomorrow – and she did. Lana wasn’t a witch hiding in the shadows; instead, she joined the resistance, a growing community of women who infiltrated her hometown’s school.
Together, they raised awareness until it could no longer be silenced. They shifted the order of things and ended the dark times of patriarchy. Once women were finally permitted to enter spheres of justice and keep their Gifts, the system unraveled – including the closure of Mercy Houses.
The birth of feminism unfolds in the Beginning series, where Lana is the lead character.

7. THE ERA OF DRAGONS
The new era brought many opportunities for women, but also new challenges. When women were allowed to enter the Academy to become guardians, Elisa Palmer was among the first two to study there. Being a pioneer wasn’t easy, and mockery from male peers was only the beginning. Elisa also struggled to master her Lightning Gift. And when she finally overcame these obstacles, she realized she had a crush on her close friend Jackie (who was also a woman).
Of course, the end of oppression didn’t mean instant acceptance. Elisa did everything she could to hide that she was queer – same-gender relationships were still forbidden by law, and guardians suspected of being ‘non-traditional’ were forced to end their careers. Fortunately, Elisa had trusted friends to protect her secret, including two men she befriended through Jackie – Theo and Urchin.
Together, the four friends embarked on an unforgettable adventure: during fall break, they visited the dragon habitat in High Canyons to steal a few dragon eggs. Reckless? Perhaps. But it was Elisa’s idea to help her friend start a dragon farm, and the others found the challenge exciting.
On the night before the heist, the four friends sat by the fireplace as Theo shared a legend from his ancestors: a man from his bloodline with the Gift of Fire was destined to tame a dragon and begin a new era. The others laughed, but Theo believed he had to try. As his great-grandfather said, “People who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.”
The next night, after the heist, the friends placed the eggs by the fire, and one of them hatched. Theo was closest, and the newborn dragon chose him as its master. Just like that, the era of dragons began!
You can read about this adventure in detail in the Magic Squad series – a duology about four friends at the Academy. With a twisting plot and many poignant moments, this story will stay with you long after you turn the last page!

8. REBELLION OF INCAPABLES
The post-patriarchy era brought mages everything they had ever wanted: the freedom to choose their careers, marriages, and whether to have children. They could travel freely across the Seven Kingdoms, thanks to their dragons.
However, this new lifestyle only deepened the divide between mages and Incapables. The non-magical population remained oppressed and struggled daily. Incapables were kept as servants; those who wanted better jobs in the cities needed special permits, which they had to carry with them at all times to avoid arrest and punishment. Even then, many ended up working only for food and shelter. Incapable servants frequently faced harassment from their masters, with no laws to protect their basic rights.
Those who stayed away from the cities were not safe either. Politicians exploited the image of Incapables for their own gain. Powerful mages profited from war spending and portrayed Incapables as dangerous insurgents launching attacks on key cities—though nearly all these attacks were secretly organized by mages themselves. This strategy kept civilians fearful and distracted from questioning the enormous war budgets, which accounted for about 30% of Lake Kingdom’s expenses. To conceal the truth, mages used their air forces to patrol the skies and attack camps of Incapables who refused to live in captivity.
Amelia Harrison was helping Incapable children in a refugee camp when the mages attacked. Thanks to her Gift of Fire, she survived. But she was the only one. Sitting amid the ashes of what had once been a school, Amelia swore to avenge everyone who died that night, including her father, who had been helping Incapables in hopes of inspiring his daughter.
Amelia joined the rebellion, led by an ambitious Incapable man named Eric. On one of her first missions, she met Michael Laine – a young, handsome cadet and the son of two high-ranking guardians. Amelia began dating Michael, spying on him and his family, and passing information to Eric. However, as she got to know Michael and his family, her beliefs began to unravel. Amelia tried to make peace between the two societies. Though her first attempt failed, she managed to reveal the truth to Elisa Palmer, Michael’s Divine mother, marking the start of a new chapter in their history.
A few years later, with the help of an influential guardian, the rebellion gained strength. Direct confrontation became inevitable. Eric, leading an army of dragons, launched an attack and declared himself the new King. To save her kingdom from war with the Eastern King, Amelia must declare herself the “Queen of Ashes,” fulfilling the Divine prophecy. Doing so would end the era of dictatorship, but it might also mean losing the man she loves. What choice will she make?
Amelia’s story unfolds in the Rebellion series, the final trilogy of the cycle.
