What makes people successful in the field of art

What is more important – talent or dedication? People have been asking me this question since I published my debut novel.
Firstly, I need to clarify what these terms mean to me.
Talent is a spark that allows you to generate new ideas and stay motivated.
The problem is that most people rely too much on this short-lived spark. Yes, it feels nice to have a great book idea, and it feels interesting to tell people about your intention to tell your story. Like a flame, your talent might blaze within, warming your heart and fueling your imagination. And just like a flame, it soon burns out.
As a result, most people who start writing their first book never finish it. And the saddest thing is that they explain this as a “lack of talent.”
Why is this happening? And how can it be prevented?
The answer is yes. Any idea, even the most ridiculous one, can be brought to life only with the help of dedication. And yes, dedication requires developing the most boring skills you can imagine – self-discipline and time-management.
Even though it doesn’t feel like fun, without dedication and hard work, even the most talented individuals may struggle to reach their full potential.
In our lives, opposing elements often cannot exist without one another. Love needs to be expressed in the form of action – care and affection. Without it, we will never know if someone loves us. The same goes for the physical products of art – every movie you watched, every song you listened to, and every book you ever read, shedding tears over the tragedies your favorite characters faced… it all would never be possible for you to experience if their creators failed to put together both the spark of their talent and the clarity of their dedication.
Thus, talent alone is not enough to guarantee success in the art world. On the other hand, dedication is the unwavering commitment to honing one’s craft and constantly improving as an artist.
It is the willingness to put in the time and effort required to master the skills necessary to create exceptional art. Dedication is what separates successful artists from the rest, as it allows them to push through challenges and setbacks in order to achieve their goals.
Take, for example, the renowned artist Vincent van Gogh. Van Gogh was not considered a talented artist in his early years, as his work was often criticized for being unconventional and unrefined. However, his dedication to his craft never wavered, and he continued to paint tirelessly despite facing numerous challenges and setbacks. It was this dedication that eventually led to his success as one of the most influential artists in history.
So, if you have a creative idea, remember – both talent and dedication are essential factors in determining the success of artists in the field of art.
While talent may give you a natural advantage, it is dedication that ultimately determines how far you will go in your artistic journey.
Sincerely yours,
Lubov Leonova
